Closure of tympanic membrane perforations using repeated trichloracetic acid

چکیده
Our aim in this study is to show the efficacy of trichloracetic acid cauterization in the tympanic membrane perforations. Between January 2002 and January 2012 central perforations in 160 ears of 142 cases were tried to be closed by repeated trichloracetic acid cauterization in one week interval followed by the placement of a piece of cigarette paper to the perforation site. In 98 of 137 ears (71.5 %) that followed-up for a desired period of time, perforation was closed after an average of 4.2 applications. No statistical relation was found between the success of treatment, and the age of patient, the site of perforation and previous history of otorrhea. It was shown that the width of perforation is an important factor in the success of treatment.

The effect of topical estrogen on healing of chronic tympanic membrane perforations and hearing threshold
BACKGROUND Considering the presence of squamous epithelial cells and fibroblasts in the tympanic membrane (TM), topical estrogen application may influence the repair of TM perforations. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the healing effect of topical estrogen on chronic TM perforations and improvement in hearing threshold. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients were enrolled in a...
متن کاملDeterminants of Failure in the Reconstruction of the Tympanic Membrane: A Case-Control Study
Introduction: The recurrence rate after tympanoplasty is variable between 0% and 50%. The causes of failure may be different and frequently interrelated, making the surgical choice difficult and the prognosis not always favourable. In this study, we analysed recurrence rate and the possible causes of failure of tympanoplasty in the treatment of tympanic perforations. Materials and Methods: Th...

OBJECTIVES We investigated the effect of topical administration of ascorbic acid on the healing process of tympanic membrane perforations in rats. DESIGN AND METHODS Thermal myringotomy was induced in both ears of 22 albino rats. The right and left ears were assigned to topical applications of ascorbic acid and saline solution, respectively. The same procedure was performed after 48 hours. Pe...

BACKGROUND The treatment of traumatic tympanic membrane perforations varies in different investigations, ranging from observation to early surgical repair. The present study aimed to focus on the closure rate and the closure time in a group of patients treated with a watchful waiting policy. METHODS The study comprised 133 consecutive patients with a total of 137 perforations. Data were evalu...
متن کاملComparison of Hyaluronic Acid Fat Graft Myringoplasty, Fat Graft Myringoplasty and Temporal Fascia Techniques for the Closure of Different Sizes and Sites of Tympanic Membrane Perforations.
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of three different myringoplasty techniques, namely hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty (HAFGM), fat graft myringoplasty (FGM), and temporal fascia for the closure of different sizes and sites of tympanic membrane perforations. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who had undergone a type 1 tympanoplasty operat...
